The House That Remembered

Chair motion sounds

The first strange thing about the old house was not the footsteps.

It was the chair.

It sat in the corner of my mother’s bedroom for thirty-seven years, covered with a faded blue cloth that had once been bright enough to match the curtains. Nobody ever sat on it. Nobody ever moved it. Even when we painted the room, even when we replaced the carpet, even when my mother rearranged every piece of furniture in the house, that chair stayed exactly where it had always been.

“Why don’t you throw it away?” I asked her once.

She looked at it for a long time.

Then she said, “Because some things are waiting for an apology.”
