The Last Bus to Bellweather

The Last Bus to Bellweather — story cover

Each night at 11:40 someone wipes the rain from the Bellweather Road timetable, showing a school bus due at 11:55 that stopped running thirty-two years ago.

Road way

Every night at 11:40, long after the last bus had passed, someone wiped the rain from the timetable at the Bellweather Road stop.

Mara noticed it on her third evening back in town.

The shelter stood across from her mother’s house, a square box of scratched glass and rusted green metal. Ivy had climbed over one side. The wooden bench inside was polished smooth by decades of waiting bodies. Above it hung a faded timetable behind cloudy plastic.

Rain had fallen since noon, thin and steady. Yet a clean circle had appeared on the timetable, as if someone had pressed a sleeve against it and rubbed until the glass was clear.

Through that circle, Mara could read one line.
