Hattie the Honeybee and the Empty Hive
Hattie the honeybee takes shortcuts all summer, napping while the others gather nectar, and notices the turning leaves only when autumn arrives.
Hard work means giving your best effort
In a blooming orchard called Applewood, there lived a young honeybee named Hattie. Hattie had shimmering wings, a cheerful buzz, and a very big wish: she wanted her hive to have the sweetest, goldenest honey in all the land.
But Hattie also had a habit. She loved shortcuts.
"Why work so hard?" she would hum. "There must be an easier way."
When the other bees flew out at dawn to gather nectar, Hattie lingered in bed. When they visited flower after flower, she stopped at the first one she found and drank the nectar herself. When it was time to build new honeycomb, she patted a few wax bits together and called it done.
"Good enough!" she would say.
Summer rolled along. The orchard glowed with blossoms, and the bees buzzed from sunrise to sunset. Hattie spent most of her days napping on a warm leaf, dreaming of golden honey jars that someone else would surely fill.
