In a leafy neighborhood called Maplewood Lane, there lived a young raccoon named Ricky. Ricky had a ringed tail, nimble paws, and a lively imagination. He loved snacks, games, and anything shiny.
But Ricky had one careless habit. He threw everything away in the same bin.
Banana peels, plastic bottles, paper bags, tin cans, glass jars, all of it went plop into the big gray trash can by the fence.
"Away is away," Ricky would say with a shrug. "Who cares where it goes?"
Each week, the garbage truck rumbled down Maplewood Lane and carried everything off, and Ricky never gave it another thought.
One sunny Saturday, Ricky followed the truck out of curiosity. It rattled past the meadow and the creek, then stopped at the edge of a hill on the far side of the valley.
