Theo and the Little Blue Elephant

Theo has carried Mr. Trunks, his blue stuffed elephant, everywhere for six years, until a lakeside picnic leaves the toy lost and the shore searched twice.

A child who loses a favorite toy and learns about letting go

Theo had a stuffed elephant named Mr. Trunks.

Mr. Trunks was small and blue, with one floppy ear, a button eye that was slightly crooked, and a belly worn soft from six years of hugs. He had gone everywhere with Theo: to the dentist, to Grandma's house, and under the covers every single night.

"Mr. Trunks is my best friend," Theo told anyone who asked. "He's never left my side."

Then came the Saturday of the Lakeside Picnic.

The whole neighborhood gathered by the water. There were checkered blankets, lemonade, and a kite contest. Theo tucked Mr. Trunks under his arm and ran from game to game, laughing, racing, and splashing at the shore.

When it was time to go home, Theo reached for Mr. Trunks.
