Wren and the Mystery of Maple Street

Wren and the Mystery of Maple Street — story cover

Ten-year-old Wren has a habit nobody on Maple Street has guessed: she slips about doing good deeds in secret, and going unseen feels better than thanks.

A girl who secretly helps others and nobody knows it’s her

On a quiet street lined with maple trees, there lived a girl named Wren. She was ten years old, with a gap-toothed smile, a pair of well-worn sneakers, and a habit that nobody in the neighborhood had ever guessed.

Wren was a secret helper.

It had started by accident. One rainy morning, she noticed old Mr. Delgado's newspaper lying in a puddle on his porch. He was slow on the stairs, and his knees ached in the damp. Without really thinking, Wren tiptoed over, picked up the paper, tucked it inside his screen door, and hurried away.

She hid behind a hedge and watched him open the door, blink in surprise, and smile.

"Well, how about that," he said to nobody. "Dry as a bone."

Something warm bloomed in Wren's chest. It felt different from being thanked. It felt quieter, and somehow bigger.
